However, a contact has told me that they were often in four-colour camo at the end of WW2. Anyone got any suggestions as to what they colours could have been? What colours were in use for camouflage in the Soviet army in 1944-45? Chris Lloyd-Staples -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Paul Roberts [proberts@mail.tamcotec.com] Subject: Brit AFV interior colours "It would seem that the interior colour, up to the end of the 1930s, was white. During WW2, it was silver. Now I was told recently, but damned if I can find the reference at the moment, that Brit interiors were white before the war, switched to silver just before the war started and in about 1943 switched back to white for the remainder of the war before switching back to silver again after the war. The reason for the switch was apparently to save on the aluminum used in the silver paint. If I can dig up the reference, I'll pass it along, so until then take this with a grain of salt... Thanks for your input - one less excuse for failure to finish building now Robert -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: JOHN PAULDING [john.paulding@virgin.net] Subject: Irish Armour Re John Harris's request for info on Irish Armour a couple of weeks ago; this came from Sean Sweeny in Dublin, who organises the 'Wolfhound' Show at the Collins Barracks in Oct. "There is only one book on Irish vehcles that I know of. It is a 36 page black & white book entitled 'Irish Armoured Cars' and written by Karl Martin. It has photos & 1/76th scale drawing of 11 vehicles plus some limited painting guide. It is out of print since 1983. I have a copy and will photocopy it if you want. The Irish Defence Forces published two handbooks in the 1980s. They contained a number of colour illustrations of vehicles as well as some unit markings. If you have specific request I will copy relevant pages. I also have stacks of issues of the Irish Defence Forces magazine, 'An Cosantóir'. Again, a specific request might produce some detail. The Irish Model Soldier Society might be willing to help, but may want a specific question. Their president, Tony Foley, has a collection of vehicle models and is the helpful sort. I'll be attending their next meeting in first week of November and will plant the seed in their minds. Denis McCarthy has written on Irish Army Vehicles in various magazines. I spoke with him in Jan/Feb and he hoped to get a definitive book on the subject published before the end of the year. I last met him in Aug/Sept and he said the book was almost ready. Hopefully that'll hit the shops before long. I only bump into Denis once and a while on the train, but I'll keep my eyes peeled. The book will be comprehensive and will be full of high quality plans. I gather the difficulty he has is that the Army are constantly changing specs so he has had to add details to his work. The Army have new APCs on trial at present, I hope he is not waiting for that result before signing off on the book. Paul & I hope to get the Army involved in next year's show. The o/c Military Archives has indicated he'll put on a photographic display. We also hope to get the Army Museum to send up some vehicles. Will keep you informed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Listmaster Subject: IPMS Nationals Spent the weekend at the IPMS Nationals in Telford, where I bumped into several Think Tankies, so I hope you all had a good time and got home safely. I also finally managed to acquire a Dragon Jagdpanzer 38t at a reasonable price, so thanks to everyone who made suggestions about where to find them, and a Dragon kit of the upgunned StuG III C, so that project is now underway in both large and small scales. Tamiya was showing a drawing of the Sdkfz 9 so although no plastic version was on display, it would appear that the kit will follow, although I failed to ask about a UK release date. I do not claim to have seen everything there so if anyone else saw something worthy of mention, please feel free to post details.
