The only interest was a nice set of articles regarding bridging, most of the rest was very poor compared with what we get today. I don't wish to be churlish, but I'd suggest that paying silly prices for old books is a risky business, you really need to know if the "accurate" reference has been superseded by more modern research and publications. I think Accurate Armour and Cromwell carry decals which include IFOR decals. I think Stencilit does an IFOR stencil, which might be of use. Richard Marks (a Think Tankie) and I discovered that the IWM has a good set of photos of these things, and Richard may even be able to tell you the neg. numbers as he had some prints done. I wonder how the new Matador traction engine fits in? Also, don't forget that the Museum of English Rural Life here in blissful Reading (that jewel of the Thames) has Fowlers (sic - check on this as its 16yrs since I began my sentence in info, work there) archive, which include works drawings. David Fletcher's book on military transport makes reference to them, and there are some shots of post-Boer War engines in a rather fine new book on the Army Service Corps by Michael Young. Your correspondent will review this for Think Tank in a later mail! Don't forget that if you are interested in static ships the place to go is SMML (Ship Model Mail List) and the magazine to read is Plastic Ship Modeller. Details via White Ensign Models - who do 1/700th Shermans and Churchills, by the way. Mike Cooper (Reading UK - currently site for an interesting attempt to re-enact the Biblical flood. For some reason I don't get to go on the Reading Ark-2000!!!) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Mike Cooper [coopmik1@hotmail.com] Subject: Great War Tanks site Hi Folks Can I just urge you to add to the number of visitors to this fine site? At present its mainly bare facts on units and machines, but it looks like Stuart Groombridge who's put it together has done a good job. Understandably as a WW1 tank fan, I'm going to keep tabs on this. Do take a look! www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Base/1545/tankcorps.htm Mike Cooper (Reading UK) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Mike Cooper [coopmik1@hotmail.com] Subject: WW1 workshop bodies Dear All Has anyone got any details/drawings of the body and fittings for a WW1 Workshop lorry. I have some photographic evidence, but before pitching in I would like to know rather more. Ideally general arrangement of the back, and layout of the "workshop" bit would be good. I've a hunch things hadn't changed much by the 1930s, but I'd rather be certain before putting knife to plastic Thanks! Mike Cooper (Reading UK) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Grant Parkin [granty_p@hotmail.com] Subject: Models in 1/76 scale Dear Robert, An open letter to all the Think Tank 'thinkers' out there. Does anybody know if there has been a comprehensive study of which kits are true 4mm : foot as there seem to be some discrepancies. The Esci M4A3 and Opel Blitz seem to scale out at 1/76 (depends upon whose measurements you use), and I've seen the AER GAZ kits scaled out to 1/76 in Tankette, again depends upon whose measurements you use. I won't mix 72 with 76 so any help will be gratefully appreciated. Yours sincerely, Grant -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: MALCOLM IRESON [ireson@carltons36.freeserve.co.uk] Subject: M-10 reference Anyone who is making the AFV Club M-10, and who lives in the Yorkshire area, could do with going down to the WETHERBY INDUSTRIAL PARK, signposted off the A1, after the Wetherby race course. I was down there recently for work, and sitting in the children’s play area is not only a complete M-10, but a Bren gun carrier , and what looks like a White half-track. I had a look at, and in the M-10; it's very rusty, a bit battered, but most of it is there, the breech has been sealed shut by welding, but the traverse and elevation handles are still there, don't know whether it works, but I'm going back down there after Beltring to get some photos, if I can get the kids off for a while. If you can get there, take a look, its well worth it!!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Listmaster Subject: Now it's the turn of my hardware to go wrong :-(.. Unfortunately I had a major hardware problem on the PC from which I run Think Tank last Thursday night and the monitor blew up. Fortunately it was one I had borrowed form work (I'm not as stupid as I look) so I replaced it with another one today and can now see what I am typing again, so back to normal. In case you were wondering why nothing appeared over the weekend :-(( Robert -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: MAFVAHQ@aol.com Subject: Modelling website Dear Robert, Would this message be of interest to the Think Tank folk? Date: 06/07/00 20:13:30 GMT Daylight Time From: jmarcpe@videotron.ca (jean-marc perreault) To: mafvahq@aol.com Just saw your posting in "MAFVA" modelling website and thought you would be interested to know that there is a website dedicated to help out modeller with lost model kit parts\decal\plan for FREE. If this can be handy to you here is the URL: http://Pages.infinit.net/jmarcpe\ Happy modeling Jmarc Spike Judd (back in the UK for a few weeks) tells me he has looked at the site and the prices were close to retail ones so it may not be as good as it sounds. But don't take someone else's word for it - look for yourself and make up your own mind. It is something of a "camping for wimps" exercise as we have organised a hotel room for showers every day but as they say, "any fool can be uncomfortable". I will be rushing round doing my measuring and photographing for a few days but Saturday will see me chained to a hot computer trying to organise the MAFVA Nationals, so if you are there, drop into the model tent (near the main entrance) to hurl abuse or just bring me cold drinks. Look forward to seeing you there – I will be escaping immediately afterwards to attend a wedding reception but head home on Sunday morning so IT permitting, the next volume should go out on Sunday.
