As proprietor of FINGERPRINT DESIGNS I chuck loads of these away (since I use a poly-bag for protection) so if anybody wants some they are free on receipt of a SAE. Send to: Fingerprint Designs, Belmont House, 22 Kent Road, Birkdale, Southport, PR8 4BJ. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: john.baumann@talk21.com Subject: DAK colours/Pink 222 DAK colours reminds me of a story I got from Larry Horsfield (one time longstanding LG member) years ago. Larry was in contact with a Hungarian that was drafted into the Wehrmacht, who was given charge of his own Sd Kfz 221 or 222 a/c. This was issued in the field in bright fresh desert sand and its colour obviously attracted a great deal of allied air activity as it stuck out like a sore thumb in the NW Europe theatre. In some town they came upon a bombed out factory, some tins of pink paint were lying around so the crew decided to give their steed a new colour. This seemed to work for a while in town against the backdrop of buildings. Further down the line, they met some Kriegsmarine lads who had in their care some spare Battleship Grey, this was duly bartered for and the a/car eventually got grey camouflage. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: john.baumann@talk21.com Subject: Bedford QLR Dan, I think I can provide what you're after at the Jan meeting (so long as I don't forget!). Does anyone have this book and can comment on it? I am questioning its veracity as it says the USMC had M47's. I have not seen that anywhere else, don't remember ever seeing a picture of such, and seem to remember having read the opposite elsewhere. Also, Zaloga doesn't include them as operators in his coverage of the M47 in "Modern American Armour". Comments, anyone?? OTH, this is the only place I remember seeing any pics of early (1920s) USMC armored cars, so I'm not sure what to think of this book. When I tried the link provided, it didn't take me there. Is this page still in existence and what might the URL be? JohnM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: nickbalmer [nickbalmer@ukonline.co.uk] Subject: British owned M8 armoured cars in post war service The advent of the Tamiya kit aroused a lot of interest in the British use of the M8 armoured car in World War II. The numbers used seem to have been very small, mainly in Italy. One wonders what became of them after the war? The most recent issue of Soldier Magazine contains a most interesting post war photo of a side view of an M8 painted sand, and crewed by two Ugandan soldiers apparently during ether the late 1940s or perhaps the early 1950s. The car, which is pictured next to a live Rhino, carries a small badge of a Rhino on its turret in the 9 o'clock position. It might be black on perhaps a red rectangular background. The caption says that the car is crewed by Ugandans and belongs to the 11th East African Division. Regards Nick Balmer Unfortunately no other markings are visible. I have been dabbling in research as to the British and Commonwealth use of the M8 for a while and have concentrated on the wartime usage. However, while watching a Channel 4 documentary on the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya in the 1950s (?) this year, I did see a rather brief sequence of a British-crewed M8 painted a light colour I assumed to be sand. It was very brief and I missed the markings (if there were any) and I seem to have failed to record whether the crew was black or white, so no idea whether they were Ugandans or not. It is, of course, not beyond the realms of possibility that the film was not from Kenya at all - I have seen too much "generic AFV footage" in inappropriate contexts to take all these things at face value :-(.. Robert -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Listmaster Subject: Wanted - Airfix M3 medium tank I have been asked about acquiring a kit of the old Airfix M3 medium tank in 1/76.
